Here are a few things to know for this year:
Planners
Your child will be using a planner daily as a tool for communicating between students, parents, and teachers. Students are expected to bring their planners home at the end of each school day. We ask that you take a moment to look over the planner with your child and sign your initials to let us know that you’ve seen it. If you like, you could leave us a note in your child’s planner as a way of communicating to us. Planners will also be used as a tool to keep track of home reading.
Clothing/Shoes
Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather as we will be spending lots of time outside this year. A rain jacket and rubber boots make rainy days more fun! A change of clothes for your child's locker (especially socks) comes in handy too. What works really well is having extra clothes in a plastic bag, so wet clothes can easily be taken home. Please also make sure your child has a pair of indoor running shoes to change into.
Lunch/Snack
We are doing pack in pack out for lunches again this year. All wrappers and containers will return home in your child’s lunch bag to be reused or recycled at home. It is also important that students have a healthy snack/lunch and a full water bottle every day. Students will take their water bottles home each day for cleaning.
Forest Adventures
We are so fortunate to have the Northeast Woods right in our backyard! Mrs. Roberts would like to have regular forest walks, but in order for this to happen we will need parent volunteers! If you would like to join us in the forest, please let Mrs. Roberts know with a quick email and she will put you on the list. *Please make sure that you have an up-to-date criminal record check. Criminal record checks are required for all volunteer positions at Brooklyn El. For more information, please check out the Brooklyn website or call the office.

Headphones
We will be working with iPads this year, as a part of our reading program. We have some headphones at the school for all students to use, but we often have to track them down and many get damaged. Things run more smoothly if students have their own headphones. If you could send headphones to school for your child that would be super. Full headphones, instead of earbuds are preferred as earbuds tend to fall out of little ears.
Family Travel and Holidays
Should you go on a family holiday during the school year, please touch base with us to let us know the dates your child will be away. We will not prepare work in advance, but we will let you know what your child is missing during his/her time away from school. We encourage students to read, play math games and keep a journal during their vacation to share it with us when they get back.
Family Happenings
If there are any significant family events that may affect your child in school (death of a family member or pet, change of living situation, separation or divorce, prolonged parental absence, etc.) please feel free to connect with us and let us know if there is anything we can do to support your child at school.
If you have any comments or concerns please don’t hesitate to email or call. We can be reached at school by phone (250-339-2232) or by email: [email protected] and [email protected] *Just a note: during the day, we are quite busy, so we often do not have time to respond to emails right away.
We are happy to make appointments if you need a longer time to chat. After school is preferable to mornings, as there is a lot to do to prepare for the day. *Please note, school district employees are not required to respond to emails from Friday 6:00 pm to Monday morning at 6:00 am.
Thanks for reading through all this! We are looking forward to a great year with the students of Division 5!
